Sometimes, language isn’t the first language of healing.

You know something’s stirring inside—a story, a weight, a question—but the moment you try to speak it, words collapse or vanish altogether. That’s where the language of imagery can meet us, gently and powerfully.

At Photo Insights™, our vision is to make the invisible visible.
We create tools that help people explore, understand, and express experiences that don’t fit neatly into words—especially the ones that don’t have shared meaning, yet are deeply felt.

What Are Photo Insights™ Cards?

Photo Insights™ therapy cards are image-based reflection tools rooted in decades of clinical work, lived experience, and meaning-making research.

Unlike abstract or symbolic art cards, our images are grounded in real-world experience and are intentionally accessible—offering multiple entry points without requiring interpretation. These aren’t inkblots to decode or tests to pass. They are visual invitations to self-awareness.

They were not designed to answer questions, but to support the asking of deeper ones—from the inside out.

Each image is based on how real people have described their own complex, often unspoken experiences—especially when those experiences don’t align with dominant narratives, or when the vocabulary of emotion feels out of reach.

“Photo Insights™ cards don’t offer answers—they offer access.”

  • Access to parts of the self left out of language
  • Access to stories waiting to be explored
  • Access to insight, integration, and meaning

Why Images Help When Words Don’t

Sometimes, when asked “How are you feeling?” the mind blanks. But show someone an image—say, a foggy road, or a fractured window—and something stirs. A sensation. A memory. A truth, quietly waiting.

Here’s why:

  • Images bypass the cognitive filter. They reach the emotional brain (amygdala) faster than language does.
  • They lower defenses. Looking at a photo doesn’t require vulnerability—but it often evokes it.
  • They engage the body. The felt sense of a card often surfaces before the narrative does.
  • They hold complexity. One image can carry grief and hope, resistance and curiosity—all at once.

Photo Insights™ cards are used not just to name emotions, but to help people locate themselves in experience—especially in places where words have failed, or where the listener has never been.

Healing Through Meaning-Making

Our approach is not symptom-focused—it’s story-focused.
We believe healing begins not with catharsis, but with context.

The decks support a wide range of experiences:

  • Ambiguous grief
  • Chronic illness
  • Relationship stress
  • Identity formation
  • Trauma integration
  • Existential questions
  • and much more

And they do so by honoring the pace and perspective of the user. There is no expectation to interpret the image “correctly.” The goal is not insight-as-solution, but insight as emergence.

Companion Tools (When the Moment Calls)

Photo Insights™ cards are designed to stand on their own.
But when used with other reflective tools, they can deepen the process—as long as those tools stay in service to the image, not ahead of it.

Tool

How It Supports

✍️ Journaling

Offers space to let the image speak. Free-write what stirs, without forcing clarity.

🧘 Mindfulness Practices

Use breath and stillness to notice how the image feels in your body.

🎨 Art Materials

Let the image inspire gesture, color, or motion—without trying to replicate it.

🔠 Emotion Word Lists

Use language only after sensation or insight has already begun to unfold.

Guiding Principle: Let the image lead. Let other tools respond—not define.

What If I Don’t Want to Talk About Feelings?

You don’t have to.

The cards are nonverbal companions. There’s no need to analyze, confess, or explain. You can simply choose, look, notice, or sit with what comes up.

Sometimes a picture feels comforting.
Sometimes it makes your stomach turn.
Sometimes it says everything you didn’t know how to say.

That’s the point.

How Are Photo Insights™ Decks Different?

Other image-based tools may use abstract art, color cues, or story prompts.
Photo Insights™ is different. Here’s how:

  • Grounded in real lived experience. Images are chosen based on decades of research with people navigating emotional terrain outside shared understanding.
  • Layered but accessible. No coded symbols, no preassigned meanings. The viewer brings the meaning.
  • Non-prescriptive. Nothing in the card tells you how to feel or what to see.
  • Client-led by design. These tools respect autonomy, not interpretation.

Created by Dr. Diane Hovey, these decks were developed from a need for meaning-making tools that build connection and clarity in places where language fails.
